Masterclass | Kurinuki

Details
Masterclass | Kurinuki
A specialized masterclass dedicated to the ancient Japanese technique of Kurinuki, exploring form through the concept of negative space. Rather than building up, the vessel is discovered through subtraction—carving, sculpting, and hollowing out a single, solid monolithic block of clay.
  • Core Inquiry: Subtractive sculpture and raw geometry. Participants interact with the material without preparatory sketches or planned designs, allowing the final parameters of weight, balance, and volume to reveal themselves organically through successive cuts.
  • What's Included: Solid stoneware blocks, traditional Japanese carving tools, professional technical supervision, firing, and a curated specialty coffee tasting.
  • Eligibility: Designed for those wishing to explore the material philosophy of Wabi Sabi through a subtractive physical practice. No previous technical background required.
  • Format: Single collective session × 3 hours. Restricted to small groups (maximum 6 participants). Conducted in person at the Milan Atelier. Check the Event Calendar for available dates (Friday 14:30–17:30 or Thursday 9:30–12:30).
  • Prerequisite Note: Finished vessels are food-safe, functional, and ready for pickup in 3–4 weeks. Every piece remains a singular trace of the subtractive gesture; variations in texture and form are technical manifestations of the method.

MANUELA METRA
