The reality as it is

“The wisdom of leaving things as they are and to see reality as it is, without changing it, or interpret it” is part of the Tibetan teachings. It seems paradoxical, yet …… instead of wanting to change, wanting to make a contribution, wanting to be perfect, wanting to give, wanting to do …… want a perfect family, to be a perfect wife, being a perfect leader ….There is a word much used and so dear to me, Metamorphoses, means transformation of form, but contains a profound mystery, interwoven with a law that is in us without being able to control it, not with the mind. Change in fact knows the dress you wear, on the surface, instead of the metamorphosis is deep, a transformation, a change of status, which follows laws arcane. When students in the studio, we start to work, with the earth, or the color, over time the body of work with art becomes a reality, there is in fact material. In “no time” of the lessons, not to time mean a state of mind, a prerequisite for any artistic process, look, look, I’m a witness. The center of my work is that, looking at things as they are, reality as it is without changing it nor interpret it. The student judges, catalogs and analyzes himself, often using criteria learned from the family, the community that surrounds it, mercilessly dissects their work, drawing up charts, nice, bad, better, worse, I am this, I am the one , I want this, I want that, art is this, this is not art ….. the most important part of the artistic work is to look at things as they are without changing them, without interpreting, without words, without preaching.

Living in the present of their work, in the here and now, in no time, in no mind..In this state of attentive Witness you learn to live with the contrast with the softness, with the error, with well-managed process, with what one has before. And I will say more, without defining it in words. My classes are in fact no speeches,  or definitions. I put myself in the absolute vacuum state, with live instruments, and observe what is. The student will learn in time to do the same. I am very pleased that my both the art world, a world in which the word is secondary, not essential. There are truths that can only be revealed through art, truth that would otherwise remain hidden. This is to reiterate that the job is done, is not that attaches a whirlwind of conclusions, interpretations, judgments, you are in silence, it is the quality of the artistic process, not in the mind. Observe consciously what you can off models, masks, the idea of perfection, the idea of the just, the beautiful …. stay with what it is, is a daily exercise, art is a wonderful tool because even unintentionally always it reveals who we are. The way we work with a surface, such as the color we use, how we build a sculpture, how much matter we use, tell us who we are, not who we want to be. Paradoxically, it is by looking at things as they are, to live in it in the beginning the metamorphosis. During the years of training, a critical part was this, knowing how to look at things as they are. My teachers have spent so much time for this (translation: we have done such a bunch), know how to observe ……. what do you see? What’s there? Not what you think, not what you want …. What? What is it? As is? Smooth, rough, thick, thin, heavy, light, observation, nothing other than observation. What is it? As a Zen koan.
