NOTEBOOK VI — TOGLIERE

Togliere

By Way of Removing

From a rough idea

to a finished work:

transformation.

Much of transformation

is removing.

It is choosing.

Shifting.

Removing the structures built on top.

Beautiful things.

That do not work.

Two lights.

One surface.

One part is beautiful—

but the composition does not hold.

I choose.

Not the most beautiful part.

The part that works.

What remains when I remove?

What changes when I add?

Removing.

Choosing.

Going deeper.

Stripping away.

Remaining?

How, not why.

Perhaps what?

How much?

Where?

Turn the work.

Walk around it.

Go for a walk.

Come back.

Perhaps climb onto the table.

Or go underneath it.

Behind the paper.

Another room.

Space is needed.

Returning.

In a spiral.

Covering,

while allowing something to remain visible.

The transparency of the gesture.

I.

Composition.

Removing skin, matter, colour.

How much?

Where?

The body responds.

Not the mind.

Place the horizon, remove the line.

Add a contrast.

Remove it by letting it dissolve?

She is the founder of Celadon – Wabi Sabi Academy, a space devoted to the study of ceramics, material experimentation, and the exploration of the relationship between earth, water, and form.
