Notebook III — The Colour

The colour before form

Mineral pigment, vegetal pigment.

Water, oil, mixtures.

I search for a transparent yet intense colour.

A colour with depth.

A sound.

Sharp.

Deep.

Complementary colours that resonate.

Matter and light.

The colour is tension.

Between light and shadow.

Between transparency and density.

Between matter and surface.

Pigment, matter, mixtures

Knowing the material.

Through experience.

Pigment.

Brushstroke.

Process.

Pictorial fabric.

Gesture.

Care.

It is about mixtures.

Which red?

Which red is it?

What recipe makes a colour opaque yet vibrant?

The colour is never pure.

Sometimes it is precisely pure.

A little of everything within everything.

Colour, light, atmosphere

Prussian blue is velvet.

Aureolin is light.

Alizarin is royal melancholy.

Cerulean.

The skies.

The colour has weight.

It has lightness.

Brilliant.

Muted.

Luminous.

Light matter.

Subtle matter.

Visceral colour.

Celestial colour.

Atmosphere.

Emotion.

Expression.

An inner atmosphere.

Mixtures and depth

Black must be deep.

Not simply dark.

Grey needs a trace of red.

A touch of yellow.

Tertiary colours are born from encounter.

Raw umber.

Indigo.

Bistre.

Recipes.

The surface

The canvas is the place.

Space.

Horizontal.

Vertical.

Dust.

Matter.

Layer.

Surface.

Transparency.

Opaque only when opacity holds the light.

Material opacity.

The struggle between matter and light.

Light–darkness.

Weight–lightness.

Line.

Dynamics.

Movement.

Composition.

Creating colour

To always create on the canvas.

To enchant the colour.

Colour as gesture.

The brushstroke.

The surface.

The form.

Which form?

Sculpture: form.

Painting: colour.

The colour before form.

What recipe makes a colour opaque yet vibrant?

What makes a colour transparent yet deep?
